Rug CATastrophe!

What am I doing on this lovely afternoon?
I'm completely pulling out all the wool from Birds and Pomegranates by Edyth O'Neill.  The cats sprayed on it :(    Since it can't be washed I was just going to toss the whole thing in the trash, but then looked at how pricey a copyrighted Edyth O'Neill rug pattern is!  So what I'm hoping will work is to rip out all the wool, they wash the backing, then re-hook it.  Who knows if I will ever actually re-hook it, but I wanted to try and save the pattern.  I guess this is what I get for having it on the floor.  Unfortunately, this was one of the few rugs that I actually ever color planned and purchased wool for...all that yummy hand-dyed peach and pomegranate has to just go in the trash.   I don't know what's worse...the smell or the thought of all this beautiful wool ruined!!

Stop by and check out my Early Work Mercantile if you have a chance.  Button on top left of page.  All my items are still available!

Sorry I didn't write back to those of you who commented on my last post.   I was under the weather for several days, but am right as rain again!

  2. Oh gosh!
    I am so sorry!
    I have been there!
I made a pink braided rug for my bedroom that the cats got to.
There is just no fixing it!

  3. Uh-oh. I thought they made special solutions to remove urine. I also thought wool was washed/dyed before hooking but it can't be soaked again? I have a lot to learn about wool and hooking but one thing I know for sure. That rug and its colors are fabulous.

  5. What a disappointing thing to happen for you Melinda.
Makes my blood boil when my cat acts like he is going to spray.
Have a wonderful Easter and hope your feeling great.

  6. I've known people who have washed hooked rugs soiled by animals, and they have survived. Really dark reds and greens can run a little, but that's better than tossing the whole thing. I would give it a try. Sarah

  9. Melinda, I would try soaking the wool in mild soap and keep rinsing the water. Separate the light wool from the dark.
Also try soaking the backing the same way but be sure to put it in a warm place in the sun so it dries fast.. I would try it~ you have nothing more to loose.
    So sorry this has happened!

  10. *****after forty years of hooking rugs, i have been through lots of these types of problems. always, as you know, you have to check for the color
fastness. you can, as suggested by louise, soak it in lukewarm water with
a bit of dawn dish detergent. you may have to repeat this a number of times. also, if you have a front loading machine...you can wash these, especially if they are on linen. i have washed burlap ones the same way and they have survived. once you have cleaned the thing...put it between
two layers of towels and get out all of the moisture...then re-steam the thing. finally, place it between two pieces of screening and let air dry...or
simply put outside and place somewhere flat and let dry. these things happen and you can get out the smell...it will fade after a while, but they
will remark it if on the floor. good lukc...post what happens. tom

  11. p.s...wash the strips and just rehook them into the foundation. and i meant
that the smell will fade...not the rug.

  12. My girlfriend has had a cat-ccident recently and she highly recommends "My Pet Peed" product. You can google it for an online tutorial. :) best of luck, it is a gorgeous rug.

  14. You can totally wash your rug in the washing machine. I wash mine quite frequently. Just put a "color catcher" in there with it in case any of the colors bleed. Wash it on a cool setting and then put it outside to dry.
