A Bump in the Road

Hello, before I get to the title stuff,  I have a small finish to share with you.  A while back I think I showed you the really neat frame that I think was originally the side piece of a grandfather clock.  I stitched the Coverlet design by Cross-Eyed Cricket to fit in this frame.  I needed to make it a touch longer, so I copied two designs off of a coverlet throw that I have.  Now it fits perfectly in the frame and the spot that I stitched it for.

I think that my sampler designs did well at the Nashville market.  Now I am just waiting for a check to arrive!

Now to what has been happening here at Merry Wind Farm.  Two weeks ago, I had two calls from my Mothers life alert in the middle of the night.  The first time I managed to get her up, it helps that she only weighed a little over 100.  The second time she had fallen flat on her face and broken her nose!  So the squad came and off to the ER who admitted her to the hospital.  Several things just started building up...her awful hip pain (which was probably the reason for the fall), the diabetes, the weight loss, weakness and muscle loss, severe bladder infection....etc, etc.  She was in the hospital for four days and then was sent to a nursing home for rehabilitation.  She has now been there for over a week and so much progress has been made.   A lidocaine patch on her hip, curing up the bladder infection, physical therapy, insulin, even medicine to increase her appetite.  She should be coming home any day now.

Now, what I want to know, is why her family doctor, who I have taken her to many, many times, didn't try this patch or medicine for her appetite?  He knew she was getting thinner and weaker, and his only remedy was to prescribe hydrocodone and oxycodone.  Not only did they not even get rid of the pain, but doped her up, and she didn't want to take opiates...I don't blame her.  This hip thing has been going on since last fall, and he never managed to help the pain.  And, he never really addressed the weight loss other than to say that she had lost more weight.  Grrr....I am really angry at him as it seems that he did nothing.  If I didn't know better, I would say he thinks she is old enough:( If she had not fallen and ended up in the hospital, who knows what would have happened.

Regarding the unfortunate broken nose, yesterday she saw the ENT specialist, and he said that even though she broke it in two places, she can breathe and it is functional.  Surgery at her age (89) and with a pacemaker is quite risky and not necessary.  I am very relieved, but she is so upset.  This is the 3rd or 4th time she has broken her nose, and she has always hated it and was hoping to get a nose job :)

I mowed the grass yesterday!!  Hooray!!  Spring has arrived!

  1. Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry to hear your mother has gone through all this! It's good news, though, that she is on new and better medication and should be home soon. I feel your frustration with doctors. I've had a couple of times now where I felt my doctor wasn't helpful medication-wise, and I can imagine it must be even worse for your mother. As for the nose job -- well, the poor thing will just have to be contented with no nose job. :D Hope everything goes well from here on out. Lots of good thoughts for your mother's recovery.

  2. Sorry to hear about the falls but glad to hear she is better. Some docs have their routine plans that they apply to all patients and look no further. I don't know why, but the appetite generator was only offered in the nursing home visits, we were just told to use Boost and such. Blech!!

  3. Praying for your dear Mom. My parents doctor was the same way, dismissing things because they were old. What a difference when they moved to the nursing home.

Hopefully you can find a Dr that specializes in the aging population. The nursing home doctor may even take on private patients. It might be worth asking. Just a thought. Warm hugs, Linda

  4. Your stitchery design if magnificent!!!!!

I need to change doctors as mine totally ignored my inquiry about a lump in my thigh. Two years of annual physical he said it was a muscle. When I told him there wasn't a similar muscle in the other leg he reluctantly gave me a referral to see a surgeon. So that surgeon requested an MRI and it was discovered I had a 3" tumor. I need a new Doctor too.

  6. Im sorry about what happenef but im glad she is on the mend. I think doctors just do the same stuff over and over - too lazy to figure out a new way to help. Shame on him.

  8. Your poor mom. it really makes a person very angry when a person you love is just not being helped. I hope her recovery is soon and she will do much better. I do love the coverlet sampler.

  9. Sorry to hear about your mother. Are there any Geriatric doctors near you? They are trained to deal with all the challenges that older patients have. I'm glad that the hospital doctors were so helpful!

So sorry mom to hear about mom but happy she is on the mend. Sorry, too, that you have to deal with all of it. It is so hard.
I love your finish. I stitched part of that years ago.
Congrats on having success at Market. That had to feel so good.
    Praying for your mom's recovery.
    Hugs :)

  13. Oh, boy! Your poor momma and you! I'm so glad she wasn't more seriously injured. My mom has chronic back pain too and it has been a real struggle to find something that helps. Elder care is a very stressful thing.
On a happier note, I love your finish and your very clever frame is perfect!

  14. Oh Melinda, so sorry to hear all that your mom has been going through (and you). Doctors/medical care = total frustration these days. Glad to hear that your mom is doing better. And a nose job at 89? I'll admit that made me laugh. Hope her recovery progresses steadily.
