New Garden Plan

Hello....I can't believe the thermostat hit 90 today in Ohio!  Unbelievable!  This just isn't normal, and yesterday I found two ticks on my 85 yr old mother when she came in.  We have never had a tick problem here on the farm, it just didn't get cold enough this winter to kill all the undesirables off.  Well, my mother just had a fit, one was in her hair and hadn't yet stuck, the other on the back of her earlobe.  So now I just we have to check each other, and the dogs, for ticks.  All the cats and dogs are on flea prevention, but I guess it doesn't get ticks.  I don't know what to do with the horses, I'll call the vet tomorrow to see if there is a horse preventative.

Along to happier news... today we got the garden/yard fence moved to accommodate the new part of the garden.  Just last year we were seriously contemplating tearing most of the garden out and just planting grass.  It is all so much work.  Well, somehow tearing up the garden turned into expanding the garden....LOL.  I must be a glutton for punishment!!!

Here is the new space, full of weeds right now until it rains so we can get started on it.

The foundation in the center was once the old smokehouse which was full of worms when we moved in and had to be torn down.  Since it is a shady spot in the evening, will probably have some chairs.  It will be a lovely space to relax and enjoy the view.

Here is some of the other garden, all cleared out already and just waiting for blooms!

Wishing everyone a pleasant spring week!
Melinda

  3. I'm fairly new to your blog, so I hope you don't mind me commenting.
Since you have a farm, you might want to consider getting a few guinea hens. Yes, they're noisy...but there are SERIOUSLY good at eating up bugs...and TICKS are on their menu! =) My Dad and many of my relatives in PA have gotten diagnosed with lymes disease...nasty stuff, and very harmful to the body! I purposfully chose guinea hens (got 8 of them 4 years ago) and 2 are still alive...they wander the yard, eating fire ants, ticks, grasshoppers, bumblebees, wasps, etc. Anyway, just a suggestion. Love your blog. ~Beth

    1. I second Beth's comment. They are used in the South, too, and we have a tick and insect problem every year!

I love their little spotted feathers and collect them when I can.

The gardens look great. We decided not to plant a veggie garden this year as they are predicting an exceptional drought in Middle Georgia. We shall see...

  4. Hi Melinda, love seeing your new creations beginning to start! I am hoping to get my new garden started soon! I love this weather and can't believe I have my yard all cleaned up and ready for the blooming to begin! It was around 81 degree's here yesterday actually at one point I had to come into the house and cool off!
We have ticks around here alot and the mosquito's are bad right now. We had medication that was for tick & flea's for our animals I think it's called revolution.
    Hope this helps!
    Enjoy this beautiful weather!

Oh, what fun tearing up the bed~ fence~ the aches & pains~ but all so worth it~ I love the feeling of tired muscles in the spring, seems like no matter what you do for work the spring reminds us we do more when the weather is nice~ makes for a good night sleep & open window with a warm breeze!!
Looking forward to seeing your bed fixed up~
