Grrrrrr, I have a burr in my craw about light bulbs

How many of you have these little candle lights with 4 watt bulbs in your  windows??
They are pretty popular around here, being an historic town and all.  And now they aren't going to make them any more?  They are illegal???  Give me a break...

Or these prim waxy bulbs in your house in primitive tin or wrought lamps?  I think they are only 3 watts.  The tops are gone because the cats chew them off...

There was an article in our local Sunday paper about all these bulbs not being made any more!  There has been a run on them at Lowes, Home Depot, etc., and you can hardly find them.  What are we to do??  The ugly new light bulbs certainly aren't primitive/colonial looking.  And those ugly new ones are expensive, I hear they cost like $40!  I know, they say they will last for 20 years, but I bet they break just as easily when knocked over by an animal, and then you've got a big mercury mess...

I know, I know, not politically correct...  If you use these little candle lights in your windows...any ideas about what to do in the future?

Grrrrrr,
Melinda

  5. I think they are not making them just in our country. We might have to mail order them now..but I think it stinks that they force us to use those expensiveones...I thought this was a free country? Plus when they do burn out, you cannot throw them in the normal trash..I'm with you it stinks. Janice

  6. Oh no. I thought the candelabra base bulbs weren't affected! I will check Pat Catan's tomorrow and see what is left. I never turn mine off and they last a year but if I turn them off and on, only a few months. You can get the plain nightlight bulbs and dip them in diluted clear silicone caulking.

  9. Such a pain. And with our old house, those lightbulbs that supposedly last 20 years don't last 20 years. lol!

  10. Lasting 20 years is a joke ~ and if the government thinks everyone is going to dispose of them properly, they are more ignorant than I thought! Guess I'd better go shopping!!

  11. I have often wondered since these new light bulbs have only been around a few years, how do they "know" they will last 20 years?? Plus there have been some scary stories reported lately of these bulbs catching fire and melting at the base. Not a fan.

  12. What a bummer.... and the new bulbs are even a greater threat to the environment in terms of breakage and disposal. I have stocked up at
the local outlets, but their inventories are just about depleted of the more
    popular sizes. Time to rebel.....

  20. I was in our Lowes yesterday (the 21st) and they are selling the regular 60 and 40 watt bulbs. There was a whole big stack of them at the front door.. I DO NOT like the new bulbs, either for looks or price.. How is a lamp shade supposed to be fitted over one of them ?
I sure hope they don't stop selling the night lights.. I will have to learn how to dip them in silicone.
