I've finished a rug!

Hello, everybody,
Today on the crisp, cool, fall day I'd like to share with you a rug that I have just completed.  It is my interpretation of a E.S. Frost sheep rug, which was beautifully drawn for me by Saundra of Woodland Junction Primitives  I haven't quite decided how to finish it.  I tried crocheting the edge, as Karen Kahle does, on my Pumpkin Mat, but it was a disaster and I ripped it out and ended up whipping with wool strips.

I try to approach my hooking in a primitive manner as they would have done l50 years ago.  I do not color plan or buy wool for a specific rug.  I have an idea, of course, of how I would like it to look, then pull out a bunch of worms in a basket, and away I go.  They are a combination of 8, 8.5, and 9 cut.

Basket of worms

I did incorporate some antique paisley from a large shawl I purchased at an antique store a while back for $10!!  I have been trying to decide whether to cut it up or not, and finally decided that I don't need something else just stuck in a closet collecting dust :)  antique paisley

Here is a close-up of the right hand side, showing some of the paisley.   I did the bird's wing in purple just for fun.

Here is the left side, with a little more paisley and a blue bird.

I was in a "fall" mood while hooking this rug, thus the colors I chose.  Here is a picture of my house taken the other day.  I have tried to put this picture for the header on my blog, but haven't figured out how to size it properly.  I need a Blogging for Dummies book, something that I can hold in my hand and read, not something on the computer!!  The leaves sure have turned early this year, and after yesterday's rain, more than half of them are already down!

And finally, here is Tisha, Petunia, and Little Benjie napping.  Can you find 3 heads and 12 legs??

Hugs to all and have a wonderful week....

Melinda

Your rug is absolutely wonderful!!! I wish I had your knack for pulling the perfect colors together. I plan and buy wool and it just doesn't quite come out as I'd like. I look forward to seeing the rug in person!
It was rainy and very chilly "up north" today.
    Pug hugs :)

  11. Hi Melinda,
GORGEOUS RUG...I've seen this design many places and each one looks a bit different. I like how each hooker puts her own spin on it.
I like your idea/style of choosing colors. This makes for easier working the design if you run out of a certain color...nice idea.

This rug is stunning. You have done an amazing job. The colors are so perfect. My Grandmother Carrie was a Hooker.. I tried but just could not or did not want the knack. I am having second thoughts about trying again ... thanks to your inspiration.
